About this Event

Can space be sacred?
If so, what makes space sacred?
If space is sacred, what can and cannot happen it?
Were Naves built for Raves, or should they only be used for chairs laid out in rows for people to sit in?

Re-thinking the use of the space in your church is a vital part of developing the worship in your parish. The tendency in many churches is to have a 'holy end' where the main action takes place, and a bigger space where people sit. It is time for a re-think.

On this study day we bring together two distinguished and imaginative speakers to stimulate our thoughts and suggest ways in which the main body of your church building can fully exploited for worship and mission.

The Bishop of Worcester, Dr John Inge, has written widely in this field, most notably A Christian Theology of Place (Ashgate 2003), and will provoke us into fresh ways of thinking about the nature of space and how it could be developed in fresh and exciting ways.

The Dean of Durham, Michael Sadgrove, has written 'Naves are not so much auditoria as processional spaces...we will only ever recover the dynamic of nave space by understanding what drama they were invented for.' Michael has many years of practical experience in getting the best out of nave space, and will help us to do the same.
